What We Do
The Healthy Youth Alliance works to assist school districts in every capacity to implement the Healthy Youth Act into their curricula. We provide community mobilization assistance so that districts can approve and implement a policy with vocal support behind them; we provide training opportunities for district to participate in regarding sexual health education; we are also a resource when it comes to the history of sex education in Washington State, current national and state news about the issue, and up-to-date information on funding for these efforts.
Why Our Work is Important
The Healthy Youth Act, while a fantastic leap for comprehensive sex education in public schools, passed without any sort of enforcement mechanism or money attached to it. Basically, there isn’t a straightforward way for the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) or the Department of Health (DOH) to ensure that the sex education program a school district has implemented is comprehensive, medically-accurate and follows OSPI’s 19 Guidelines for Sexual Health and Disease Prevention.
