“…Now here I am with two girls of my own. I want them to receive all the facts. They need to hear more than just “Don’t do it!” and I’m not sure I can do it on my own. I need the schools to help to educate my girls to be safe.” –Parent from Cashmere WA

The Healthy Youth Alliance understands that sexuality education begins in the home. Parents are often the most influential and trusted sources for information. According to Advocates for Youth, research shows that positive communication between parents and their children can help young people establish individual values and make healthy decisions. Talking to children and teens about sex may be difficult for some parents. Some parents may be afraid they do not know the right answers or feel confused about the proper amount of information to offer.

Here is a list of resources that parents may find useful when trying to initiate this important conversation at home. We encourage you to also check out our teen section for further resources.

Advocates for Youth provide information and resources you need to begin talking with your children about sex.

Planned Parenthood Great Northwest offers classes for parent and pre-teens to enhance communication between parents and children around issues of sexuality.

As parents, you have the right in Washington State to review the sexuality education curricula provided by your local school district. At least one month before teaching a program in sexual health education, schools must provide notice to parents of the planned instruction and the availability of materials for inspection.
